My Galaxy costs about 400 for a proper service at my local garage.

Aircon units are expensive for some reason. My one got a leak and I was quoted 600 to replace it. It's about eight hours work on a Galaxy, taking out all the fascia and stuff to get at it. What a fecking good bit of design that was!

Car servicing is a bit of a con. In the good old days there were grease points and items like ball joints were adjustable. Therese days most parts are throw away so there is very little involved in servicing. Most serving these days is just an oil and filter change, air filter change and an inspection of the rest of the car. Many mechanical and engine parts are constantly adjusted by the engine management system and do not require attention. The most important item for the engine is the cam belt that should be changed at lease every two years or at 40k.

A nearby local garage to me takes on work from the main dealers, this is quite common. So £100 plus per hour work will be sub contracted for about £25/£30 per hour. Items like gearbox repairs can be done very cheaply if sent direct to a specialist. I know of one that BMW and Mercedes send their gear boxes to and they will charge double to the end customer

When I sorted out the lease my new car, I also took out a maintenance and servicing contract at £25 per month for the 3 and half year term. That's based on 12k miles a year and covers everything that you may need doing, including MOT's. I could have covered tyres too but I thought the price increase too much (can't remember what it was now).

I used to have an A6 and got it dealer serviced. It was generally around the £250-300 mark if I remember.

BUT - they then listed all the things they wanted to put right for me at a ridiculous price, £650 for an oil-leak, £130 for a battery. I got them done at a local garage at a lot lower price...

              Older and ...well, just older!!

Have got this servicing business sussed completely. Have brought 3 new cars in 2 years and haven't done enough miles in any of them to have to have a service Unfortunately, may have to give in over the next couple of months and will be £500-£600 (assuming there is nothing wrong).

                  Use Independants not Main Dealers

In May I was travelling up the M6 when the pipe connecting the turbo to the intercooler split. When I got back - which took forever, have you ever driven a non-turbo, turbo diesel? - I took the car to my local independant who:

                  Replaced the turbo pipe
                  Did a full Service
                  Replaced the drive belts
Drained down, refilled and tested the aircon
                  Replaced a worn suspension bush

                  £480 inluding VAT

                  I wasn't unhappy with that.

I'm about to do a 3 year contract & am waivering over taking the maintenance inclusive or paying seperately - seems the 9500 service interval will be just oil & filter changes but the terms of the warranty are dealer servicing.
