The lobbying firm Whitehouse have also orchestrated an amendment to this year's finance bill for us.

At the beginning I was highly sceptical about lobbying companies but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and they have certainly got us places we couldn't have achieved on our own. Their fees are not exorbitant either, especially when spread amongst several hundred members of NTRT donating a couple of hundred quid each.

It's sad that you have to pay to open doors in Parliament but that seems to be the way it is.

Btw, most people would probably agree with AtW that we had it coming to us.

They've certainly earned their money, hope they will pay their fair share of tax on it

Not sure if you are saying those not affected are relishing the schadenfreude, but you sailed close to the wind and got caught out - I recall looking into those schemes when they were being touted but (fortunately) declining as they did appear a step too far
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

Well that's the point I was trying to make earlier in the thread. Whatever the moral arguments around aggressive tax avoidance schemes - when those affected tried to engage their MPs, they got diddly squat. Pay some cash to a lobbying firm - and hey presto, MPs are suddenly interested.

Every few years there is a mini scandal when an investigative reporter is able to "buy" access to some government official. The response from government is largely the same - this is a contrived scenario on the part of the reporters - why would anyone really need to buy access to these people anyway. They are approachable - and all genuine interested parties could engage with these people without having to dole out any cash - yeah right...

+1 The schemes seem to be taking the p*ss. So sympathy for those who chose to use them and then got stung is limited IMO.

You don't seem to understand that there is a higher principle at stake here.
