Yep me too twice, when the engine is billowing steam it means it´s f***ed.
You need to take it into the garage like straight away, where it will probably be pronunced dead and then they ask you if they should sell it for scrap.
There was no billowing. Just a few puffs from the exhaust then it cleared. Probably as it ran out of coolant

You might have a faulty fan relay. That happened to me recently. Everyone was saying head gasket, same symptoms as you too. In the end cost a tenner to fix it.

Fan is coming in ok. It's electro mechanical, ie belt driven with a clutch which is actuated by the thermocouple.
You should never run an engine with the water boiling, the tolerances on modern cars will inevitably lead to the engine being written off.
The worst that happened to my car while contracting in Europe was that the crankshaft broke in NL. I phoned the ANWB, they charged me £110 for recovery and one year’s membership European wide. A bargain, I then recovered the car back to the UK myself at the end of the contact with my new car and trailer as the repair was half cost in the UK.
