The point is that the country as a whole lost out. No doubt it takes two to tango and the unions were as much to blame as Thatcher's government, but ultimately what transpired has blighted a generation and left a legacy of social problems we're still trying to solve. I may well be a little better off financially than I would otherwise have been but that's scant reward for having to live in a world where one feels uncomfortable.
