    If it was one of those frozen plastic packed cannon balls bought in a supermarket it's probably safe for weeks they pump so much salt into them.

    It would be like those sailors who opened a barrel of salt pork in the early 1800s, only to notice the label "Best before 1701". The pork was like mahogany, but after being boiled for an hour or two was fine.
