If you find a couple who do have the ability to understannd running a business, I'm sure they'll be able to help you motivate others, in time.

Good, find one or two of your most talented people and get them to help you do that; I know, it means taking a hit as you'd like them out on the road or on the phone, but in the longer term it should pay back.

No, but they bloody well should. A proper OU professor should have a lurid kipper tie, a tweed jacket and a beard.

Or promote someone to manage the others while he tries to work out how he can illegally smuggle in Thai prostitutes.

DA, are you sure that your poor moral is not part of the cause of your employees poor moral?

If you are frustrated and unenthusiastic then they are likely to pick up on it. Are you overdue some holiday time?

Would you be able to change the focus of your company and push towards something new (I have no idea how recruitment works, what I said then might not even make sense!).

Perhaps there is something else you can change to bring the fun back to the office? Is there anyone you can promote to babysit these people whilst you concentrate on something more interesting?

As for people lacking of self motivation, I can relate:

A friend lost his job, I told him there was a vacancy at my client and he should send me his cv. He replied he did not have an up to date one and would look through his computer to see if he could find a recent one to update. He would do that at the weekend and get back to me on Monday - he did not. Almost two weeks later he sent his cv and the position has been taken.

Another friend could not be bothered to email his cv to someone who had a vacancy they were looking to fill. I went as far as to email them both and say to him - this man has a vacancy for a tester, email him your cv. He did not. Although he found time to complain on facebook about not having a job.

              It just baffles me.

An office full of agents with poor morals? Surely not, Shirley?

I have no idea how big your business is but if it is a larger business then I presume you have a layer of management who are 'taking up the slack', however you may have answered your own question when you mentioned 'micro management' which I suggest means your management aren't driven or leading.
