I took Lady Tester to Liverpool for a weekend a few weeks ago; hotels were not too expensive and restaurants very good; friendly service everywhere. She liked it a lot and said 'much better than London'.

We stayed in this place; Liverpool Hotels | Hotels In Liverpool City Centre | Liverpool Hotel | Heywood House not too expensive and really quite pleasant; the restaurant nextdoor does a great breakfast.

Looks quite good but sadly no parking (I drive to the UK so I can both get around easily and go shopping) and although its in Liverpool which some people may have a problem with, I only have one...I wouldn't be able to understand anyone! Honest, if I speak to people now in the UK who have a dialect I have a real problem understanding them. I shall bookmark this one, thanks.

Last time I was in Bristol I stayed at the Mercure Brigstow which treated us pretty well. We got one of the executive suites on the top floor with both a balcony and river view (so I could smoke!) plus it had both bath and shower (can't understand hotels with only baths) and was very close to all the decent eateries and pubs in town. Also didn't have to pay as I used my points card
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

Ah yes, a car park often puts about 100 quid extra on the price of a hotel, and then you have to pay extra to park! There's a decent q-park just around the corner though, and going from Germany it's probably easier to fly to John Lennon airport then get a taxi for 15 quid. But really, if you avoid the obvious bad areas like Toxteth and Bootle, the city centre's quite smart, even trendy and really worth a visit. They're not so bad to understand either anymore; I think a lot of regional accents are softening, especially in the cities. Interestingly in Liverpool you're actually likely to be served (very competently and friendly) by locals in the bars and restaurants than anywhere else in UK; I think they've been poor for long enough to realise any job's better than none!

It's just quite funny when you're greeted by a waiter in a smart restaurant who says 'hallo mate, what y'avin to drink?' but that's infinitely preferable to the faux subservience in some other places.

tis true mich, the accents are softening. But they are still poor, last friday there were loads of girls out that were so poor they couldn't afford too many clothes. It was heart rending to see them with their skimpy clobber on

I noticed that at Albert Dock on a Friday night. Barely enough textile to cover both tits and their muff, but huge chunky platform shoes; perhaps wood is cheaper than cotton these days.

Why do people stay in hotels. Surely guest houses are cheaper?
I remember staying in one in Thurso, Scotland for £10/night 20 years ago. A bargain!

Guest houses are for when you are being tight while working on a contract (especially starting a new contract before the wonga starts rolling in).

When you take the missus with you for a break you want something better.
