I wrote something similar to this about the importance of music in state schools previously but it stands for all Arts subjects and sports.

There are plenty of team sports that can be done without a playing field however there are plenty of sports regardless of whether they are team or not that cannot be done inside.

You can't learn to throw a javelin, shot put or discus inside.

Also the playing field in my secondary school was used for more than just PE lessons. The fact that the edges had hedges was useful for some science lessons. (Luckily some of the science teachers were also PE teachers. )
The ultimate team sport is rugby union. All shapes and sizes with abroad variety of skills and abilities. Players playing for each other using skill graft and courage plus scope for individualism. Although it is a extensively played amongst the middle and upper classes the model would be a perfect metaphor for socialism?

The game teaches discipline and control, loyalty, competitiveness and so many more values than any other sport or activity.
