Hence, cycling, running, rowing, walking are not sports they are fitness and endurance tests. Stuff like darts, shooting, golf and snooker are games defined by just skill.
Good wind-up.
This is the view of those who discovered from an early age that they are crap at competitive sport, don't understand it, and are thereafter in denial of its worth.

Feck! Have you seen her time?Originally posted by TimberWolf View PostHuge cheer was Jessica Ennis on the start line and another when she won.
12.54, same as what won the gold in Beijing in the individual event - and this is the heptathlon!
That sticks her well in the lead.Comment

Has Cameron taken a few weeks off?
He always seems to be in the crowd at the Olympics. And was lucky to get all those tickets.Comment

He reminds me of what proper tory prime ministers used to be like in the old days - swanning about in leisure pursuits and just dropping into Parliament every now and again when he has to.Originally posted by TimberWolf View PostHe always seems to be in the crowd at the Olympics. In other words he is "out of the way", which can only be a good thing.Comment

The national flags superimposed in the water with CGI in the rowing events are clever. The boats go over them without too many artefacts as do waves, although oars do sometimes disappear.Comment

Erm, how much track and field athletic training have you had? Any idea how much technical analysis goes into sprinting technique, foot placement, height of knee raise, determining balance of cadence and stride length etc etc? Sponsors and athletics associations spend millions on this kind of thing to try and get an athlete to run 1 or 2 10ths faster. Now OK, I'll give you this; running 100m in a good club or regional champs time (between 10 and 10.5 ) is not necessarily a particularly skilful business, but once you get close to the boundaries of what your body can do it becomes skilful and involves a lot of science; the tiniest details like when to move from acceleration to maintenance without trying to force more accelaration, how to place your feet as you come out of the blocks (millimetres make a big difference at the start) can make the difference between not reaching the final and winning a gold. There's also skill involved in being able to work together with a very skilled coach to improve tiny details.Originally posted by Alf W View PostTo be a sport both fitness and skill have to come into play.

Please, spend some time observing and training with top class athletes if you don't think running, cycling and rowing are skilful. You might discover you're talking BS.And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014Comment
