The 70-odd Met Police protection team guarding the flame around the UK, have had to have Risk Assessments and are to receive counselling when they return from guarding the flame.

"Apparently" they are more at risk of committing suicide when they return from guarding the flame as it's happened in other countries.

I thought it was a joke to when I heard it over the radio a couple of months ago particularly as it was first reported in some tabloids.

But a few serving police officers phoned in anonymously, admitted it was true and explained the reasoning.

They were also disgusted with the fact the Olympic torch guards are getting more counselling etc then they or any emergency services do if they see and deal with something horrendous.

Great stuff - a Plan B is always around the corner.

Olympic flame carriers cash in by listing their torches on eBay for up to £150,000 | Mail Online

Can you remember what the reasoning was? I'd love to know!

Apart from the suppose suicide link the only other reasoning was to ensure the top brass in the Met weren't sued in later years.

Though it doesn't stop any office forced out for any reason being known in the media as "one of the former-Olympic guards."
