Pay is going down at the moment but I still wouldn't piss on a fire unless I was paid at least 250/day. Fortunately I'm doing a lot of private work which sometimes nets 750/day because I overquote for work *whistle* and take a couple of days a week off. People I tend to work for tend not to know exactly how long things really take.

The best time to get a high rate is on a new project. Projects have deadlines and companies will take a risk , or have to , to get the deadlines met.
That means paying a bit more over the odds.
There are a few new projects happening in the UK , with the Govt. drive for more e-business enabling, the UK is a good place to look right now.
Avoid day to day contracts like maintenance or operational stuff , these always pay rubbish.
