As someone who hates football (but loves England) I am interested to know if that is true. Seems to me that some players only give their best for their club and not their country - particularly the ape one (I forget his name).

If my assumption is correct, should footballer's pay be linked to their England performance or something?

Back to my point, England players aren't bad, it's just that the whole set-up, especially the non-stop, breakneck season immediately followed by the England "training camp", mitigates against any England team arriving in a good state to do any good in summer tournaments. They usually look knackered.

Rugby and cricket solved it by having central contracts.

But you can't do that in football because the FA cannot afford the massive wages being paid by clubs. On top of that, the clubs would never agree to it anyway, and the Premier League and Sky are too powerful and would object to their star players being pulled out of prime-time TV entertainment, as they see it, on the whim of the England manager.

Don't forget that Roy was fre due to being out of contract at the end of the season whereas Tootenham would have to be sompensated for 'Arry. Roy also has a much better international record than an other England manager in recent years and he's not a scummy little arse like 'Arry.

There's a lot in what you say. Woy has managed countries including at tournaments, and done well with limited resources. And he has extensive club experience abroad including Inter Milan.

'Arry just buys expensive players and tells them to get on with it. If he got the England job he'd come unstuck the minute he puts a bid in for Iniesta and Messi.

I heard this the other day, millions of pounds cheaper than extricating Harry from his Tottenham contract.

A figure over £10 million was mentioned.

Thank goodness Harry is staying at Spurs.

I agree. The down side is that with Hodgson, Redknapp or any other manager the chance of England winning a tournament is slim at best. I suspect Harry would of at least tried to play attractive/attacking football. Hodgson will be safety first (which has served him well so far, but doesn't exactly make for good viewing).

As above, Holloway or someone of his ilk. Would cost a fraction of someone like harry and Roy, and the money saved could go into grass roots to try and improve our chances of actually winning somthing.

Most decent english players are also playing in a team full of foriegners week in week out. Someone like Lampard can look like a world beater when he's playing through balls to Drogba. Doesn't work quite as well when he's playing them to Crouch

English football is suffering from the same thing Scottish football suffered 25 years ago. Your top division of twenty teams is so full of foriegn players that you don't have enough top class players playing at the top level week in week out.

Was Scottish foolball full of English players then?
