My rule of thumb is 6.5 and below on IMDB and it gets avoided.

I would say this is the case 95% of the time but there rare exceptions, both ways.

The snag is that weenies (in taste if not age), mostly in the US I imagine, sometimes mark down and disparage gems unless these are Hollywood mainstream.

I'd go a bit lower if the plot sounds promising, down to 5 say. But admittedly I've rarely if ever seen a 3.5 or 4 IMDB-rated film that'll vote for Christmas.

Oh and another turkey I downloaded yesterday The Innkeepers (2011) - Shyte from start to (almost) end, until I gave up on it.

Troy and Kingdom of Heaven were awful, I think I sent most of the time in the cinema looking at my watch I was sooooo bored.

Oh I really liked Kingdom of Heaven. But then I guess you either like that kind of historical genre or not.

One of the baddies, Reynald de Chatillon, looked the splitting image of the Marquess of Bath, and his multi-coloured dyed hair made it look as if he'd just painted another wall at Longleat.

Watched Absentia (2011) last night. Had bad vibes about it to start with, due to its "fly on the wall" feel at the outset and interminable inconsequential twittering of the two women, but it developed quite well. Wasn't too impressed with the ending though, which left everything hanging in limbo. So I can't recommend that one unreservedly.

Love the genre, just didn't love the choice of actors.

Another film for my list is underworld awakening, I think I spent most of the film wondering when the plot would start.
