Seconded. I once had a very pleasant weekend there.

We found a restaurant that also had bedrooms rather than a hotel proper and it was delightful. After an excellent six course meal plus tasting the local wine, we weren't worried that our rooms were basic. Waking up with a view of the river was most pleasant.

Annecy has some great restaurants. We stayed there years ago as a stopover - Les Tresoms? - Michelin starred food, was an unexpected treat.

The last time we pinged in a journey to Auxerre took about 6 hours from Dover and were quite fresh from an hour stopover at the lakes just north of them. Its not a bad run and you can completely avoid Paris if you like, by clipping north of it. Quite an easy drive.
