    Basically Edward Heath never forgave the Yanks for making monkeys of the British government during the Suez Crisis. Much of his Europhilia was rooted in his seething resentment of Americans IMHO.

                    well most people wanted to subsume britain, not destroy it.
                    The jocks wanted us off their backs, so did the yanks and the irish.
                    The french wanted to peg us back
                    the nazis wanted us as their mates

                    the only people who wanted to break us up into bits, and take the juicy bits were the Vikings, as far as I can tell

                    and they did a blooming good job too.
