Kanye, Do yourself a favour and keep invoicing. Bordom is a small price to pay for a wedge of cash at the end of the week. There will be plenty of time on the bench at some point theres no reason to invite it...

As others have said, spend some money on some new skills and at least make sure you are not losing current skills. A sysadmin at one of my clients used to spend some of his day on expert exchange solving problems. He had sold it to his bosses that he was strengthening his skills for them for free and they quite liked that idea. In the time I knew him he taught himself a few scripting languages and Java to go with his Unix Ninja Skills.

Wouldn't that depend on where he lives?

For example if you live in Stratford and work in Canary Wharf and then move onto another role in the square mile then wouldn't that be a significantly different journey ? But if you lived in Birmingham, overall the journey wouldn't be that much different and less likely to "reset the clock".

Alot of people expect that because banks pay so much the work will be challenging. The work is mostly easy, the people are dire and the less said about commuting the better.

I remember working with a phd guy who had done some great stuff for a pharmasutical company and doubled his money to join an IB. Boy was he sour.

IMO get a second IB contract (too many do just 1 and it looks so obvious) then try to find siomething interesting for a while. Should be easier to get back into IB later if you want the dosh.

This came as a big shock to me during my first stint in a bank. I arrived first day to see all these flash cars and managers on 6 figure salaries. I thought there was no way I could compete with these guys.... Then after a few months I saw what they are really made of and how overpaid the geezers are. I saw top level guys doing simple spreadsheet tasks for ridiculous amounts of money. Unbelievable really.

When was the last time you took a holiday? Why not get out and see the world? Sure cure for boredom. Ditch the contract; they would ditch you in an instant if it suited them.

You're lucky to be one of the few who can actually afford to do it, so don't waste the opportunity. Afterwards you will have time to bring your skills up to date as well.

30mins from an Investment bank is roughly South Woodford or Wansted on the Central line or maybe Wood Street, Tottenham or Chingford into Liverpool street Coming from the West takes much longer from the populated areas and if you are deep in zone 1 then you can probably walk over the bridge into the Square Mile so wouldn't need a railcard

As for reseting the clock: Depends if you have been claiming a zone 1 - 3 travel card rather than single journeys.

Do you go to the Ferry boat in much? That used to be a nice pub for a beer. Used to quite like wandering down the canal to the Princess of wales by the Ice Rink as well. Not a bad Sunday walk.

No, because its where the job is, not where you live ie the job is in the same geographical area.

I had a boring contract once, couldn't wait for it to end, every day was a drag. I stuck out the contract duration but had no intention of renewing. 6 weeks before the end of the contract I put loads of effort into getting another gig lined up so that I couldn't renew regardless of any offer.

How would you have felt if you jumped ship and the other contract got pulled leaving you to spend the next few months on the bench? Last year I was in a situation where the client co said no more renewals. I got a gig lined up for me an a few of the other guys that were also going out the door. The new client was HP. They were a farse. They spent the next 3 months trying to get the paperwork sorted internally. I had a few months left to run with the current gig so it wasn't an issue. However with 2 days to go till the start of the new gig they turned round and said "Hey we know we waisted 8 weeks getting the last set of sign offs from 6 levels of managers above us but they just did a project review and canned you and your team..." "Hope you can find something else at late notice..." As it was I had no intention of handing my notice in at the current gig as I had seen them miss three previous start dates, and the no more renewals stance changed to an end of this year renewal...
