      Re: Bargain

I suspect it will be more subtle than that dim, after all this is a "democracy". Anyone without one will just not be able get a driving licence, passport, start a business etc and then, after the passage of some bill supposedly to prevent fraud, will not be able to open a bank account, get a credit card etc.

          Yes Xog.

Having an ID card will be "optional". The government will let us be "free" to choose.

But no card, no social security, no NHS treatment, no bank account, no mortgage, no insurance, no pension, no drivers license, no marriage allowed, etc.

You will be "free" to choose. :rollin

Interesting point. Wouldn't that appeal to a real libertarian? Mr Galt?

is there any chance that they'd "expire" old marriage licences?

The no benefits option appeals too assuming you could then opt out of taxes.

Is this technology actually in use anywhere in the world? Considering the 20-30% failure rates they are talking about from trials I seriously doubt it. Linking all the disparate computer systems employed by different parts of gov. IT to the data will be fun too.

I really can't see this one working - the quted costs rise on a weekly basis and the reason for doing it changes almost as often too.

                -----------------------

The whole idea of ID cards makes me sick to be honest. They will have no effect on 'terrorism', it is just another stealth tax from Mr Brown who is desperately trying to recover some of his 'lost' pennies. Minister this morning admitted this morning that the 'unit' cost would be £93 but they hadn't finalised the 'tarriff' for the general populous - translated as this is gonna cost you a packet. Saying that though I can't see the scheme ever getting off the ground to be honest
