Best thing I did before the long winter nights drew in was replace all my 50 watt halogen bulbs with these 4w LEDs:

      GU10 LED Bulb 220 Lumens 45W Equiv

So instead of burning 1000 watts in the kitchen, I am only using 80. The LEDs above are the only ones I have found that are as bright as a halogen.

Yep. Getting expensive. I though my £600 bill was steep mind....

Moving away from EDF to a cheaper provider now as well. EDF didnt help themselves by getting every single bill wrong in the year I was with them mind. Useless they are.

Trouble is I've moved to npower and should have checked first and apparently they are worse than EDF

Great insulation, ground source heat pump, solar PV and water, coupled with a nice acre of willow keeps the bills down. £20k to set up a year back, but already well compensated on feed in and the actual savings we've made.

I have a couple more things planned, with re routing a stream with a 2m head, and once I get permission from Defra/EA, we'll be fully neutral.

Energy Bills are only going one way.

We tried LED a few years back, and it simply dropped a pool of light underneath. However, we're replacing them now through the house. There's a lot of savings there and the light seems somewhat better.

Where are guys living ? Some big mansion with all the doors and windows open ?

With the kind of winter we have had, I hardly had to keep the heating running for more than 3-4 hours per day. My energy bill for last month was about £80 combined.

Having said that, I did spend a lot of money in replacing doors and windows couple of years back, so the house is well insulated.

A lot of it depends where you live, what sort of property you have and how big it is.

A little 700 sq ft upper floor new build flat in the centre of London is going to use a fraction of the heating and lighting of say a 200 year old 4000 sq ft 7 bedroom detached house in the middle of Northumberland wilderness or Scottish highlands.

We're making a concerted effort to switch things off (server, printer etc) when not in use. However, my wife leaves lights on all over the place though "because they look nice".
Burn a £20 "because it looks nice" and see what she says.
