Oh dear, lets try again. If billions of 'tax dollars(?) are being used for operations in Iraq' they are having to be diverted, directly or indirectly, from spending on schools, roads, hospitals, police etc etc. The overall effect on the amount of tax we pay is is dificult to quantify because Mr Brown, conveniently, doesn't break-down expenditure in Iraq in his budget. However, this expenditure is estimated at £5billion to date. IMO this represents £5Billion of our money that could have been used to reduce the tax burden but instead was poured down the tulip-hole. The effect on the tax burden may well be small, but to deny it exists is just stupid.

Oh dear...lets look at it again.

your taxes are not going up because Gordo thinks we need to cover the cost of the war. Your taxes are going up cause no one argues otherwise with your government and its need to tax the feck out of you for no good reason

FACT - the cost of social welfare is higher than the cost of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. Using your logic the reason taxes are going up is because more money is being diverted to cover the costs of a welfare system out of control!

Your constant insistence that we can actually affect what the government does. Have you forgotten where you are?
Well, that and your utter ******* stupidity.
        Why not?

Nobody has suggested the Iraq war is the only reason taxes are going up. I merely suggested that the £5Billion spent in Iraq has only made the spiraling tax burden worse. Are you really stupid enough to suggest that spending billions of pounds on waging war has absolutely zero effect on taxation? The money has to come from somewhere, ffs!

Of course it's a fact you idiot. Everybody knows social welfare expenditure is higher. Just because the Iraq war isn't the single largest government expenditure doesn't mean it can't contribute in some way to the rising tax burden!

You are both right. If you want to bicker about the rights and wrongs of the war then just get on with it

If that is truely the case then why only bring up the cost of the war in all of your previous postings? Bit late now to back out of that hole you have dug almsie

It seems you are stupid enough to suggest that the reason taxes are going up is because of the cost of the conflict currently involving British forces...by your singular insistance of this being the case Im afriad the only silly little boy here is yourself

But then again...why stop something you have made a habit of here on these forums alsmie

                Mailman,

If only using the smilie was actually a substitute for intelligence! I'm not trying to back out of anything. I stand by my assertion that, while expenditure on the war is not solely responsible for rising taxes, it does contribute to them. Only an imbecile such as yourself would fail to realise this.

You seem to be confusing the debate at hand. The questions we are trying to answer is not 'Is the Iraq War the largest expenditure of the government?' but 'Has the Iraq War contributed to the tax burden in positive or negative way?' You, predictably, are incapable of distinguishing between the two.

Calling you an imbecile is more a statement of fact than an insult. How did you end up so stupid? I'm intrigued.

Logic says that's right. But if we have spent 5bln in Iraq (out of a total public sector budget of approx 600 bln) then does that actually contribut 5 bln to rising taxes?

No is the answer. What I would like to know is how much has it contributed, and thats very difficult to guess. What would the cost of those troops have been were they not in Iraq, need to know that before the incremental cost can be figured out. I suspect this cost to be comparatively low.
