1609 meters in a mile so the price is 181 mln per mile.

Price of 1 mile of motorway was £28 mln in 2005:

Meanwhile China is building Maglev stuff that runs at crazy speeds.

Successful Maglev in China, 18 miles - speed en route: 431 km/h (268 mph)

"AirRail" Birmingham - length of 585 meters, former failed Maglev project, speed en route: 36 km/h (22 mph)

          I rest my case.

I would have just thought, since they have done a lot of west coast line work in the past decade, that instead, they would have put the high speed link along the east coast as it's a very popular commuter route as well.

Also if people working in london, could get better commute times to the NE, more would live there, rejuvenating scummy parts of the UK ...
There are less benefits in upgrading the ECML because it's already fairly straight, so the trains can go faster. The WCML is bendy so there will always be a lower limit on the maximum running speed than on the ECML.

If we want to dissipate the success of London to the rest of the country and get people in the North working - in proper jobs- then this rail link is vital

What kind of non "proper" jobs do people in the North do at the moment?
