      It seems to me the problem is democracy. That is goverments' desires to win votes by giving the people what they want, but not asking them to pay for it. Maybe if we ever get out of this, and it doesn't end in WW3, it needs to be enshrined in law that a goverments's first priority is to make the books balance.
      Maybe government spending should be dependent on how much money is in the bank from last year's tax receipts instead of based on projections of how much will come in next year.
