Right, here's the story. Got a contract, subject to compliance checks (it's a bank).

Bank came back and asked me to verify a 'linked address'. I've never heard of it, so I told them that.

Today i got on to experian who flatly refuse to remove it. It can only be removed by the person that put it on. In this case, it's Hutchison telecom (now known as '3') and they put it on in Sept 2009 !!!.

I phoned them and got ****ed about endlessly but they told me I have two phone contracts at that address. They said they will now report this to their fraud dept but it will take up to 28 days to resolve.

    In the meantime, I'm losing 3 grand a ******* week !!

I had a problem a few years back. I had to sign up to CIFAS. It's a real pain but does protect.

In addition, whoever it was (they attempted about 10 bank accounts/credit cards) etc had all my details. I was able to use my own DOB to get into some of them (try that).

I Streetviewed the house and was all for going up to London to kick the tulip out of someone. I had a mate who knew the area look at the address, and he immediately said 'Polish'. They'd done some building work there, had a load of equipment nicked, sent some builders down the same road to a house and had the tulip kicked out of them.

He recommended the police. So I reported it. Did CIFAS. Police did **** all.

Unfortunately the only way to clear up your credit records is to get 3 to unlink your addresses by doing a data subject access request on them.

However if the thief is using your DOB as well then this won't work.

If they aren't then send the a DSAR by recorded delivery using the letter format on the information commissioner's website. Add in a cheque with the cheque number to speed things up.

Unfortunately it will take about 4 months to sort out but does get them to correct their records.

        Thanks for that Ellen.

The bit I can't understand is that 3 have put this down as an application with this spurious address as 'current address' and my actual address as previous address. This dates from sept 2009. However, there ar NO spurious accounts on my credit file and absolutely no other signs of anything being amis, so the only thing is this 'linked' address. Everything else is normal. Thought that was pretty wierd.

Cheers MF. I'll set about the CIFAS thing in the morning.

I'm only bothered about it because it's stopping me starting this contract. Despite it being from Sept 2009 it's not causing me any other problems.

As you rightly say, there is no point in going to the police. They do **** all when someone nicks your car/tries to break in to your house/gets searched and found to be carrying a blade so i can't see them being bothered about this non-crime

Not weird the thieves have just worked out how to outsmart a mobile phone operator.

This isn't hard to do as mobile network operators in general are and have been very bad at credit checking and data protection.

I've suffered from it but if you read any consumer reports it's common for them to screw around with people's credit records.

In my case with 3 they were happy to credit check me against 2 addresses I didn't live at even though I gave them the correct address. I luckily realised this was possibly a data protection issue so could sort it out.

This was useful when I changed to O2 and they decided to send me someone else's itemised phone bills as well as my own. The bills only stopped when I threatened to involve the information commissioner.....

I can't 'pop round' because it's in ST Albans (several hundred miles away).

Some c**t has applied for a phone contract using my name and giving my current address as their previous.

It came up in a background check for a contract. C**ts.

I really don't understand why people in your situation don't start a class action for libel against these arrogant credit reference agencies, if they're holding and disseminating false and, er, discreditable information about you and refuse to remove it promptly when this is drawn to their attention. Same goes for their corporate users. I'd write to your MP. Seriously.

I know what you mean. Am angry enough to want to do it !!

Unfortunately, it looks like the CR agencies have the get out of being 'holders of information' and all information placed on your file comes from outside, like lenders mostly and the bloody regulatory SLAs they have are ridiculous. Twenty eight days to answer a query etc. The lenders are mostly the same if they've ****ed something up. They have plenty of time to piss around before doing anything and it all seems to be within their regulatory framework

                      Bit of an update.

Got a call from someone at Hutchison Telecom (a Bob) who admitted that after their investigation, the entry on my credit file was 'in the error'. They have asked Experian to remove it, so just need to wait to see how long that will take.
