Poll tax riots. Almost 21 years ago to the day. 'ave it coppa. Thatch out!
Poll tax seems to make perfect sense to me as local services (schools, hospitals, police, garbage) depends on number of people in the property - what doesn't is getting only 25% discount on massive council tax due to single occupancy.

Absolutely, what you had with the poll tax though is all the scum living off the state realising they weren't so comfy anymore and were being made to pay their fair share for the services provided to all.
Of course you also had some liberal types and others who just wanted a good old dust up. (Incase anyone is offended by my stereotyping and don't think they fit in the first category).
Bring back Maggie and smash the Unions.

The poll tax was a good idea in theory, but it was a nightmare to administer (hang on Thatcher = more admin, red tape, public sector jobs - yeah read it and weep). I think it's a lazy revisionist view that the riots had anything to do with its demise.
It became electorally unpopular and even the Tories realised it wasn't going to fly in the long term - albeit it is arguably much fairer. The Tories even ditched Thatcher when they became frightened that she couldn't win another election.
Seriously the poll tax riots were nothing to do with the introduction of a new tax.
It was purely to give all the socialist scum who were voted out only a few years earlier the chance to try and de-rail the tories attempts to change the country.
That particular demo/riot was just populated by rent a thug students and other tax dodgers who were shipped in from all over the country on the promise of 10 B&H and a large bottle of cider.
Yep, several.
Mr P and I discussed going down for the march on Saturday, but decided against it as we were worried about Pogle Jr's safety
What were you going to protest about Pogle, just out of interest?

went on an anti-thatcher demo in Liverpool in 1971 (iirc) 'margaret thatcher-milk snatcher'
I remember feeling great when we stuck our banners through the top window of the 28 bus, where all the old biddies were shouting down to us to bugger off home and get a haircut and a job.
then feeling sh1te when I realised that the demo had been hijacked by the commies and the militants.
