Malaysia is certainly not a liberal democracy, but in terms of tolerance for religious diversity is pretty good for a developing country.

It is still far worse than any 'Christian' country for religious rights, they even have a religious police force which can hand out canings for such crimes as not covering up enough in public.

If that is the best example of progressive state in the Muslim world then your not exacly selling us the idea they are a tolerant and free minded bunch of people.

So what? If I blow up Big Ben in the name of Christianity, that wouldn't mean it was insensitive to build a chapel on the site. It's not like they had an Islamic Referendum to decide if it was a good idea.

Some rational comments from a NY'er...

Never mind that it isn’t a mosque, and that we’re talking about four New York City blocks, which, where I come from, is the equivalent of the other side of town. Also please ignore the fact that there are already mosques in the vicinity – go here for the Google map – and not only that, but what about all those Muslims living and working in the general vicinity? Isn’t their mere presence a slap in the face? What about Alfanoose, the excellent Arabic restaurant a few blocks away, where customers regularly consume such pro-terrorist items as lamb shawarma? Not to mention falafels!
