Don't get me wrong, I have no more (or less) time for Islam than I do for any other religion, but singling them out leads down an unpleasant path to destination unknown.
You'll have to explain the logic of that one in the context Old Greg. Of all the world's states, while there are many in which religion has a major influence and determines some laws, it is only Islamic states which are officially theist, ie which explicitly base their entire legal framework on a religion. While there are some illiberal states of other persuasions, Islam is the only religion that practices this same illiberality across continents. It is also the only religion which denies its followers any choice over their own faith.

We are not singling out Islam, it is singling out itself in a unique way by declaring itself above other belief systems on a huge scale.

None of that would matter if it was not an agrresively proselytizing religion that seeks one way or another to spread wherever it can and if many of its principals were not unacceptable to anyone of socially liberal beliefs.

Xog, it's took us hundreds of years to get to where we are now with regard to religious toleration. One thing we share with Iran is that the Head of State is the head of the state religion, it's only that we choose to be liberal borne on the back of John Locke's treatise in the mid 17th Cen and even then this wasn't handed out to aethists who could still be punished. Catholic Churches were only allowed to be built from Aprox 1850. Women have had the vote for less than a century and it's only just acceptable to be a homosexual in the armed forces. We can't just expect other states and religions to immediately adopt our newly acquired wisdom or else we run the risk of ending up like Athens when it tried to enforce it's newly developed democracy on the rest of the Greek world. This took almost two thousand years to re-emerge. We must lead by gentle example and persuasion.

The most insensitive thing I saw , vis a vis, ground zero, was when they flew an airliner low over NY for a publicity shot, a couple of years ago.

                    That was dumb

Its more of a controversy, or at least it should be, that the site hasn't been rebuilt with a monument yet. Its been 8 years now.

This is all building up to Mr. Wilder's visit isn't it? I wonder what stunt he'll pull? And I just can't imagine what will happen on the 11th of Sept this year. Any guesses. Mass rioting. Stone throwing at every passing Muslim? Could get nasty.
