      I have just noticed that the Blue Orchid is no more. Wonder if they can get rid of the rest of Croydon too? Never understood why the British Army didn't recruit some of the 'young ladies' from there. Would have had Aghanistan sorted within a couple of months.

          Ah, I've got a story about that.

          In pub. In Croydon. Mid 1990s. Got chatting to Home Office official and I asked him about the immigration bit.

          In his Home Counties Civil Servant way (i.e condescending) he explained to me how rough it was in some countries. and "How can we possibly refuse entry to people from those places? You have no idea how bad it is!"

          Having lived and worked in the Third World, I was speechless. I think arrogance based on ignorance is the best way to describe his attitude.

          Still angry after all these years about that episode...
