Yes, when I lived out in the sticks. They sent a generator out after a couple of days but no compensation.

screw me backwards. its been 15 hours without power and finally they got it back up after digging a mini trench outside our building and faffing around in hour fuse box.

This worried me so torday I bought:

        1 x wind up lamp
        1 x wind up AM/FM radio
1 x wind up mobile phone charger / torch
1 x wind up head lamp

makes you think doesn't it how dependent on technolgy we have become, that short novel 'When The Machine Stops' sums it up brilliantly.

Anyone recommend any survivalist items in case of a natural disaster / civil or zombie war in London ?

Food supply in UN blue barrels (keeps water and rats out) - things like rice & pasta + energy bars and vitamin tablets.

Pah, kids stuff. Try living in the Caribbean during hurricane season (which is .... now). Your shopping list should contain bottled water, non-perishable foods, and loads more.

Where HAB Inc is based, they give out guidance that has loads of things that I didn't originally think of. For example, yeah I thought I better stock up with food and water, medical kits, lights, but tools should include heavy working gloves? Boy did I find out that they are essential!
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

My God, are you serious? Power off for a few hours, in LONDON, and you're buying survival gear? And looking for tips on how to live through this calamity?

No the zombie reference above meant that I'm not running around in a panic or distraught about what occured. But it did get me thinking, only a few hours without electricity does throw you out. No hot water for washing or light in dark areas of the home does cause incovinience and I was wondering what if there was a large scale tragedy here and what tools could you use to help you.

                That's all.

That reminds me of the power cut I had in the 1980s:
                  • got a cracking log fire going
                  • cooked dinner with gas
                  • ate dinner in front of the fire
                  • read the evening paper by firelight
                  • realised I had no music

The lack of music had me remembering what an enormous dent batteries had made in my pocket money in my teens. I had obviously spent all the intervening years avoiding anything run by batteries, for I had nothing in the house that used the things (bar a torch).

I rang the pub up and asked if they were open. Hand pumped beer, roaring fire and candles was the response, so off I trotted.

I bought a Walkman, a load of candles and a couple of hurricane lamps the next day.

Lots of cigarettes, even if you don't smoke yourself. In the third world, Marlboro are recommended; they can be better than currency.
