I just tried looking too and also reached the end of the internet. I do recall from childhood, just barely, that the name seemed appropriate at the time. To little kids, daddies have long thin legs.

I thought outside of the box and used Bing:

WikiAnswers - How did daddy long legs get their name

Although that refers to the american flavour Daddy Longlegs

Some people call them granddaddy long-legs:
Some species, especially Pholcus phalangioides, are commonly called granddaddy long-legs spider, daddy long-legs spider, daddy long-legger, cellar spider, vibrating spider, or house spider. Confusion often arises because the name "daddy long-legs" is also applied to two distantly related arthropod groups: the harvestmen (which are arachnids but not spiders), and crane flies (which are insects).

Is this a clue or does it deepen the mystery further?

Anyway, shouldn't they more correctly be called daddy longlegged spiders (rather than daddy longlegs spider)?

Crane flies are one of the few insects i can touch, don't mind cupping them in my hand and lobbing them out of the window. Other cup-able insects include ladybirds and moths.

            All other insects are bastards.

My previous post was incorrect. They are crane flies and therefore insects.

It probably depends on where you live. Wolfram has them under Arachnida.

                      Contrast with an ant:

Okay, the eyes do seem to bulge a bit from this angle.
