The only reason I didn't vote for him was because I wanted labour and the snot goblin out.

I wish Nick well and hope he finds something soon...
I don't see anything to laugh at here:

Far from browbeating him into accepting inappropriate work, his interviewer arranged a specialist CV review with a recruitment expert and several agencies focused on professional candidates.

He left the interview impressed at how he had been dealt with.
and the chap was honest about his reason for signing on being to keep his NI contributions going. I gave my brother the same advice when he was made redundant

He told supporters that he had been impressed by staff at the city’s Station Street Jobcentre.
They must be pretty unique then. From what I have seen of job centres, whilst trying to help a couple of my sons find work, they are worse than useless.
Firstly, they supply a webpage that is hopelessly out of date, then they employ endless unqualified freeloaders to vet CVs for posts for which they have no idea what skills may be required.
It is almost always impossible to circumvent these imbeciles in order to speak to the end client, and many of the posts advertised have been filled weeks before they ever get removed from the webpage.
Shower of clueless muppets mostly. Get rid of the lot of them and give the job of updating the available posts to Jobserve, or someone equally well versed in operating such a service efficiently.

Sadly there are few people better than the government at finding jobs for imbeciles.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'
