As far as I know DV is the highest clearance and the only way to go higher is to tack things onto it (‘TK’ and ‘STRAP’ were the ones I had), I know a guy who used to work on NATO sites with SC+ NATO clearance so I guess it’s a similar deal and therefore not as deep as DV.

Agreed on the skeletons in the closet thing but DV is very understanding, so long as you disclose them. I disclosed everything and they were good; I know someone who didn't disclose a driving ban for drink driving ten years ago and he failed.

It's more if you have skeletons that you don't tell them about. If you try and hide it from them, they will find it, and you still won't get clearance.

It all boils down to whether you can be easily bribed or blackmailed, so yes as long as they know you've had several extra marital affairs, a rent boy, a drug problem and you're 100k in debt you’ll be fine.

If you do have skeletons in the cupboard, you can still get DV'd, as long as the government are happy that you are not blackmailable, they will give you clearance.
I had DV clearance, and had to get NATO clearance to work in Baghdad, my clearance came through on my last week there.

I'm more concerned that .... ermm.... CV/profile maybe doesn't quite accurately reflect past clients/dates. Not accurately at all in some cases. Like a holiday brochure it emphasises what you want to see and doesn't mention the construction site outside the balcony.

I think I'll drop out of the NATO thing as this would be picked up and I would fail the test.

I don't suppose they would recruit me based on one CV but accept a totally different one for the clearance checking !

The clearance itself probably won't check the CV - it's more about what you are like as a person and whether they think that you would be a target for blackmail / selling secrets etc.

The CV checking part is the job of an interviewer and agency rather than the clearance department.

On the same basis I'd imagine they'd also want to satisfy themselves that anyone else it would be reasonable to assume you'd prefer not to know does know. So for example if you admitted to them you were a rent boy (say) 20 years ago, presumably unknown to your family but perhaps with a police record, they'd applaud your honesty but then ask if you have any objections to them mentioning that to your parents or siblings when they approach them to discuss you.
