Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson -

You go down to the pool and try and run through water.Originally posted by d000hg View PostHow's that different than a sports car, air resistance is by far the biggest factor above about 100mph. Above that speed, cars conserve momentum about as well as a boat does at 10knots.Comment

Get on the roof of a train travelling at 100mph and try running forward.Originally posted by minestrone View PostYou go down to the pool and try and run through water.

You could ask the same question about aircraft. Why don't aircraft have gears? Because it would look funny seeing a pilot engage 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and then 5th (avoiding reverse) to take-off.Comment

Again the point is conservation of energy.
Not that my opinion counts for anything with my 2nd Class Engineering officer exemptions.Comment

Quick back of the envelope calculation suggests this would require a force of 1000 N, just to stay still, or like lifting 100 kg.Originally posted by gingerjedi View PostGet on the roof of a train travelling at 100mph and try running forward.

TW,

imagine the plane lunging forward with each gear change and the pilot crunching the gears and swearing
anyways,
this is going away from the point

Not really. It is funny image you admit. Plus, aircraft don't use gears either, that I know of (excluding landing gear). The same principle as boats exaggerated.Originally posted by milanbenes View Post'You could ask the same question about aircraft. Why don't aircraft have gears?
