    What's happening is just a blip compared to what will happen when oil runs out*, which may not be long now**. The last 100 years growth has been built on the back of cheap oil and we carry on as if it will last forever.

    * Becomes more expensive
    ** Perhaps 5 or 10 years

      To be fair, there are a lot of different energy options turning up - nuclear, wind, solar, wave etc. We'll survive somehow

          Oil is not just energy. It is a raw material used in lots and lots of products. The main one being food.

          When the oil runs out a lot of people will starve. It is already happening with these bio-fuels where 3rd-world farmers are selling their crops to make diesel, and now the local poor population can't afford to buy food.

                A frightening point was made on the Today programme this morning.

                The Prime Minister remains Prime Minister until he resigns. In the event of an unclear result at the election Gordon could refuse to resign while he attempts to form a coalition or minority government (Ted Heath did this for four days in February 1974) and the Queen cannot stop him.

                You may never get rid of Gordon.

                  It would be the best thing to happen to the country.

                  There would be a massive sell off of Sterling, Gilts would plummet driving interest rates up. Total mayhem.

                  However, it might be the only way to get through the thick skulls of the voters what they have done and to not vote Labour again.
                  How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

                    Have the markets indicated that they are expecting a turbulent day by planning to open extra early or anything?

                    I don't reckon that we will know the result before breakfast in any case.

                      I've been inclined to supporting the hairy arsed one's point of view that actually a minority labour govt and then a sterling crash and IMF rescue would finally force Britain to sort out the debt problem and drive it home to people that a Labour government is economic suicide.

                      However, look what's happening in Greece. Public sector 'workers' are going on strike, raising red flags, rioting and generally trying to disrupt the whole country, because socialists are simply incapable of facing the simple truth that if you keep spending more money than you have and keep spending other people's money, someday you'll run out of other people's money and go bust. They still can't face facts. Greece is bust. Without the IMF that will mean no oil, no electricity, no food imports, no loans for businesses, no jobs and no salaries. Are British socalists any more realistic than their Greek comrades? I don't think so.
