Now then, something seems to have gone wrong with The Times. It used to be a quality newspaper whose readers could be relied upon to be erudite and reasoned in their correspondence.

Not the first time, and it means they've flown over a lot more land before getting to the UK. Perhaps the problem here is not the Russians, who are simply doing their job, but the various other European countries who didn't seem to issue a warning or perhaps didn't even see them.

As Mick says, this has been going on for years; in fact since the beginning of the cold war and by both sides.

It is a non story and is made purely for political purposes. The aircraft only fly in uncontrolled airspace and are escorted as soon as they are spotted. The rout taken is via the Baltic and North Sea; there is no legal way of stopping them. Furthermore the UK is warned by Russia in advance of the flight if the aircraft carries nuclear weapons. (Under the ABM Treaty).

While Germany, France, China and Japan are busy making money and doing business in Russia, Britain is busy being the US lapdog.

Reminds me of a RAFG Phantom F4 on QRA at Wildenwrath back in the late eighties. Got launched on an intercept and turned the old ruski away. On his way back spotted some Jags flying low level and asked them if he could practice an an intercept. Permission was granted and he duly set off. Radar track spotted, track locked, sidewinder slave on, sidewinder acq obtained, master arm on, sidewinder growling nicely, trigger pressed and ....
















WHOOSH ...... the silly ****er forgot he was armed up !!!!!!!! as is standard on QRA.

Luckily not all his senses left him and he managed to radio the Jag pilot who managed to eject moments before his tailplane was decapiated.


Note:- in peace time flying Phantoms flew around with a acq sidewinder i.e. just the aiming part no arms or rockets.
