A poor signal to noise ratio means it is hard to get the message from amongst the noise.

It was a common expression on UseNet, possibly a hang-over from the keen HAM participants in the earlier days but more likely due to the military participants in the earliest days.

Ahem, mods, please now move this thread to Technical.
So what this mean for me? I assume RH is guiding me as a Mod, I'm just totally baffled as to what this guidance is.

IF it is a suggestion that my posts are too full of "noise" ie carp, then wtf am I getting singled out? Is it just my turn this week?

That's it - in places the chaff needs sifting from the wheat. It was an expression, SY, and it doesn't apply solely to you.

(edit as just seen your post and re-read the thread: it's gentle general guidance, I've modified my original post to reflect that)

        OK

Now should I stop posting in general in general, or avoid posting certain things?

For example, in online discussion forums and other online communities, off-topic posts and spam are regarded as "noise" that interferes with the "signal" of appropriate discussion."

It means threads such as "Has it all calmed down now?" are not on-topic and are contributing to the noise.

It means, now all the trolls are dead. Next on the list are the goblins.

                  Meh - no tongues.

Just keep the stream-of-conciousness stuff to LR if possible. If you just can't help it baby, then LR should be your new bookmark.

To clarify, it was prompted by your posts but intended for you plus a wider audience, hence the edit.

Yes, but which posts? This thread was not started by me.

Post 25 was a humorous response to SG and was "noisy" by design.
