Five years ago, this was just some more record breaking freezing cold.

And every summer we get a record breaking heatwave somewhere. The extremes are getting more extreme, the average is going up.

That doesn't rule out record breaking cold snaps any more than Usain Bolt setting a new 100m world record precludes me from taking several days to cover the same distance.
