I have never actually got a contract as a result of answering an ad. 8 contracts in five years all came through phone calls from people I know. 3 of them were contracts where the Project Manager specifically asked for me as he’d worked with me before.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

And you trust an agent more?

      Amusing.

Someone lacking compunction comes in handy to many an organisation.

I've seen a load of CVs lately and they are all tulipe. Remember, it's not just agents that filter them but also the clueless dipsticks in HR and the clueless dipsticks in purchasing decide on a preferred suppliers list that can't provide decent people.
Because they see their monopoly position as an opprtunity to increase their cut. And if they are sole suppliers, they don't mind so much if you don't like who they send, it'll just boost your perception of how hard it is to find people, so you'll have to pay them more. Meanwhile all the guys on the bench are having a boost to their perception of how hard it is to find a contract, so they'll have to work for less.

                    Oooo, that's not nice.

Can't everyone just try and be nice to each other.

                    You know: big group hug.

Tea, biscuits, cucumber sandwiches. That kind of thing.
