My Plan B is really my old Plan A - i.e. what I used to do in permiedom. There's good reason to think I'm about to make some money from it, which with any luck it means I won't have to go back to contacting and can keep working on phase 2 - which is what I'm most excited about, and I think could be quite big, but probably needs another 6-12 months of full time development.

That's the problem with software: you have to put in the development time up front. I think the days of knocking together a website and making a fortune are long gone. Anything worthwhile needs substantial amount of effort.

But look at it this way: if you're on the bench, you may as well work on something, even if it turns out to be a complete waste of time, or if you can't realistically finish it. Because ultimately work is better than Jeremey Kyle.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

There will be busts and there will be booms.

During busts people will make posts about how there is no way to escape the bench, it will go on forever.

During the booms people will make boasts, subtle and unsubtle, about the ease of making money.

During the busts it will be hard to get good, well paid roles, during the booms it will be easier.

So while it is hard just now it will get easier.

it's during the booms that you need to invest in the plan b

the recession is a good trigger to sew the seeds of thought that once the next boom comes instead of buying that 3 series bmer, you'll put the money into something regenerative

the .com recession did that for me

and now I have 7yr old passat to prove it

          Milan.

and before the kids it had full leather seats?

There really is no point getting a flash limo until your kids have got past the messy stage.
