So what did Mrs T. do for us then?
Nothing.
Oh apart from selling off council houses to create a home owning society. (Though home ownership is being destroyed by New Lier.)
And massively increasing access to higher education so that our industry has skilled employees. (Access to higher education from the poorer classes has gone down under New Lier.)
And introducing laws on secondary picketing to tame the unions and stop them being used by the leaders for political ends rather than the benefit of the work force (3 day week, the dead not buried, winter of discontent anyone?).
And privatising industries such as BT that needed a good kick up the arse.
And creating our world leading telecoms industry by selling off licenses for the radio spectrum.
And creating the London Docklands Development Corporation which has created a world leading financial centre in the east end of London.
And reducing top end tax from 80% (that was driving wealth creaters overseas) to a more reasonable 40%. Net tax take went UP because more people kept their wealth here.
And generally deregulating the economy, which was growing and healthy for the entire Major government, and which is still growing as a result despite Gordon's best efforts to screw it up.
The problem with socialists is they want it all handed to them on a plate without any risk or hard work. After all, why should someone who risks their home and future on a small business reap the rewards for hard work?

I am merely pointing out that all politicians are the same. You lot are so far up the tory governments' collective arse it is sickening. Thatcher was the worst of the lot IMO. Don't kid yourself that she was in it for the good of the nation - She would have trampled any of the middle - upper classes if it suuited her own agenda in the same way she rode roughshod over the working classes.
The only reason you lean to the right is because it suits your OWN pocket. The collective morale and state of the nation comes a long way behind.
PS - How many changes were there in the way unemployment figures were calculated under the tories?
I wonder whose pocket is suited to the NL regime then? Scroungers and immigrants mainly I think! The reason Mrs T has a bad name is that things were fairly harsh for a while whilst she sorted out the horrendous mess that Labour had left (while they were still old labour - still crap though). It has been proven time and time again that solcialism does not work.Comment

This Gov't makes great its achievement of recording the highest employment but look at the plunging quality of jobs. The volumes of highly skilled people (not only IT) who have no option but to work in unskilled jobs. And all the while the constant false statements about skills shortages.
Wasn't it Gordon Brown in one of his maiden speeches in the HoC when in opposition, who so vehemently accused the Thatcher Gov't of, and I quote:
"This Government's answer to tackling Britain's unemployment is by creating a nation of window cleaners".
Precisely what his Gov't is doing .. and crowing about it.
And if it wasn't for the unsustainable levels of public sector employment created by Labour, you'd see, and will do again soon, a sharp rise in unemployment.
Before Thatcher, Britain was very much the poor man of Europe. Gripped by one industrial dispute after another. The Unions were running the country, not the elected Gov't.
I accept manufacturing suffered under her watch but that was not all her doing, the overpowerful unions did more of their fair share. And let's not forget the decline of British manufacturing has continued under your deceitful New Labour.
Tony Bliar aspires to Thatcher. He desperately wants to leave a similar legacy but has no chance. His only legacy will be Iraq.Last edited by BobTheCrate; 15 December 2005, 14:30.Comment
