        You actually can. Although Damp soil works better than all the other solutions if you have to cross on foot, go out and try it.

              on gravel yes, but at night a seashell snapping sounds like a pistol shot

              well we made little plank sandals with a great big nail in each corner and crossed on spikes. like walking on mini-stilts

                    40m long stilts would have been a better solution. you could have crossed in one step, And held the advantage of high ground
