You actually can. Although Damp soil works better than all the other solutions if you have to cross on foot, go out and try it.

It does work EO, But is time consuming, and would work best with a 6 man team over 50m and would/should take approximately 12 minutes to cross.

40m long stilts would have been a better solution. you could have crossed in one step, And held the advantage of high ground
