40th Birthday Etiquette

A good mate of mine hits the big 4O in a couple of weeks.

I am wondering if I should buy him anything,say a bottle of whisky/ alternative, or if this is not really the done thing. We don't agreeably bother with cards etc for our other birthdays.

Sorry if this appears a bit of a dumb question, for some reson I find myself in a bit of a dilema over this

No. Just another birthday. 40, 39, 52 ? What's the difference. Women ascribe a lot more relevance to these so called 'milestones'.
