Bloody hell, I hope you make sure it's switched off first.

But I see other solutions around - oil-filled radiators, etc - is there a best solution?
If you have access to a chimney then get a pot-belly wood stove (about £200) You can leave burning 24h and it will use very little wood while just smouldering. The other advantage is you can keep a coffee pot on the go for free.

        Free?

Bollocks. £200 quid for the stove, plus fuel. Bloody expensive coffee warmer-upper!

          Too right. £3.81 is plenty.

The coffee is heated for free. You can scavenge for timber, a neighbour of mine does that and he has never paid for wood. I am lucky as I have about ten years supply of cut timber on my land. The older the timber; the better it is for burning. With good dry timber there is no visible smoke.

Seconded. If there's no chimney, a gas heater with a balanced flue works well. It does have to go on an outside wall with decent ventilation of course.

When I put one in my home office the Gas Board had a special offer on them which included free installation.

Just put the central heating on FFS. WTF have contractors turned into?

What next, how can I cook one chip in the oven without heating the whole oven.

                  Jeez.

I have a blowtorch I use for creme brulee, not officially a chef's one, but from a DIY shop. if you wrap the chip in foil, and then very carefully use the torch on it's lowest setting, and constantly moving up and down the chip so that it cooks evenly and the foil doesn't melt, it just might work.

Fan heaters tend to dry out the air - I use a halogen lamp in my office to take the chill off - no noise either.
