So even though the deployment went smoothly it is still a failure, and we have been firefighting all day long.
I saw an email this morning promising the business it would be fixed today, and yet again saw that we were still bringing ourselves under more and more pressure by making promises we can't keep.
I did stand up to the client, or more pertinently the team leader (who in this case is a noob contractor). I told him that it is not going to work out for me in this role if he keeps telling people when I will get stuff done withought getting some sort of nod from me first. His background isn't technical so some of his statements are preposterous.
He wasn't ever so impressed, and said that he warned me at interview it was a pressured environment. TBH I can't remember ever working in an unpressured one, but to be honest while you can thrash the staff for 3 weeks or so before they grow weary, you do need to stop destroying morale by wantonly being a yes man, and creating more misery for the troops.
I was called in to see his boss, who was very understanding and said she had no problem with my work and wanted to see why she had been informed I was unhappy. I was careful in what I said, but gently put my point across. She was extremely reasonable and asked me if I had seen the project plan (I have not). She thought this might help, and has organised a team meeting to go through it in detail.
This one prolly won't work out, but I am glad I stood my ground and have no regrets. I can only carry on working as hard as I can without giving myself health problems, and hope that this is good enough.
