    Did you deploy today SY01?

We all love Andyw and I usually vote for him. Not in this case though
The deployment happened on Friday night and went smoothly. Unfortunately the UAT wasn't up to scratch so what was deployed didn't actually work. (I did ask to rerun UAT but there wasn't time).

So even though the deployment went smoothly it is still a failure, and we have been firefighting all day long.

I saw an email this morning promising the business it would be fixed today, and yet again saw that we were still bringing ourselves under more and more pressure by making promises we can't keep.

I did stand up to the client, or more pertinently the team leader (who in this case is a noob contractor). I told him that it is not going to work out for me in this role if he keeps telling people when I will get stuff done withought getting some sort of nod from me first. His background isn't technical so some of his statements are preposterous.

He wasn't ever so impressed, and said that he warned me at interview it was a pressured environment. TBH I can't remember ever working in an unpressured one, but to be honest while you can thrash the staff for 3 weeks or so before they grow weary, you do need to stop destroying morale by wantonly being a yes man, and creating more misery for the troops.

I was called in to see his boss, who was very understanding and said she had no problem with my work and wanted to see why she had been informed I was unhappy. I was careful in what I said, but gently put my point across. She was extremely reasonable and asked me if I had seen the project plan (I have not). She thought this might help, and has organised a team meeting to go through it in detail.

This one prolly won't work out, but I am glad I stood my ground and have no regrets. I can only carry on working as hard as I can without giving myself health problems, and hope that this is good enough.

Standing up to the client - good.

You haven't made unrealistic promises (have you?)

Don't let the team leader wind you up. Pressure - OK, winky knife in the back - not good. He's in trouble and he knows it.

Do not complain to the boss, even if she asks you to. There are more subtle ways of sticking the knife in.

It will work out but if it doesn't (and please trust me on this), fck 'em. It's only money.

No. I say it will take 2 hours to do something, he is hounding me for it after 15 minutes. I asked to push the go live back 1.5 weeks so we could run proper testing.

suityou02 says the same. She also said he sounds like an irritating jumped up little feck. Canny lass that she is.

Never really been one to put the knife in, just crap at politicking. Way too nice/soft. I'd settle for him being more reasonable. I do think he is way out of his depth though.

You don't ask them, you tell them that is how long it will take. They won't like it ...

Can't afford a tenner as am unemployable after I thumped my last project manager

For arguments sake SY01 may be a sockie.
I've been in that situation and it is very, very, very unpleasant. Learned to handle it on my own and if my experience can help anyone then, frankly, I don't give a toss whether SY01 is a sockie or not.

                  Not a sockie.

You advice is good, and greatly appreciated.

But surely its attention in general you crave.

                      Good or bad.

                      Just attention.

I don't have an ignore list, I just stop reading if you get too whiney.
