I am considering buying a 1990 Eunos Automatic tan leather and wood trim for a mere £900 as a second car.

Reckon that car will be around for another 20 years, Mazdas really are bullet proof.

One of those Japanese grey imports with low mileage?

I found insurance on our 2nd import (Mitsubishi Legnum) was disproportionate to the value of the car. We went back to UK-spec with our family car after 3 years of imports. I just keep my aging Jap-spec Skyline now as you expect to pay a bit on insurance for those.

I agree with DiscoStu - the fords are so common, every man and his dog can keep them on the road. Probably get a lower-mileage mondeo rather than focus though, if running costs are not a concern.

Civic is also a good idea, although it will be old-shape at that money - not the snazzy newer one which prob start around £4,500 at the mo.

Volvo's scoring surprisingly highly at the moment.
What do you need? Big estate car? 7 seats? 2 seats? Around town mostly or mostly long trips on the motorway? looking for speed or comfort or cheapest motoring possible? How many miles will you travel per year?

          Blimey, talk about vague.

Indeed - 100Km's, around 60K miles, only been in the country for 7 years so no rust.

Insurance is a classic policy (£150 a year).

Has to be worth considering a Jap import MX5 for cheap quirky motoring if local miles and only need a passenger seat......

I would recommend onre of these...

I would recommend the SAAB 9000. I have bought 2 over the last 11 years of motoring, for my second car. Which I use for racking up commuting miles. They are very cheap to buy, £350 for the last one. Which came with all the bits including climate control and heated leather seats….
They are extremely reliable, and most importantly as safe as houses in a big smash.

To back this up, a fellow contractor, who I met for the first time back in 2005 was looking for something with more OOOMMPPHH than his 2.0 auto Mondy. I let him test-drive my 9000 CSE. He loved it and bought a low mileage one for peanuts a few days later. Around a month later, on the M1 whilst travelling at 80 MPH a car that suddenly changed lanes struck his 9000. He was pushed into the central crash barrier front on, and then span around to be hit on the rear door by a 40ft lorry. He walked out alive, just a bit shaken and a slightly sore neck! The policemen who attended the scene said that if he was driving almost any other car then he would have at least been seriously injured if not dead!

Yes they are a bit of a grandad’s car and can look on the ugly side. But when you drive one, you feel the quality of the ride and build quality + safety, of what was at new around 25k, who gives a monkey’s………..
