In that case, you take the fine (you seem to acknowledge you knew you were breaking the speed limit) and ask the council or whoever will listen why the speed limit is reduced on one side.

It's not unreasonable for a dual carriageway to have two separate limits for each flow of traffic - to all intents and purposes they are two separate slabs of road. Look around and try and work out why the limit is less. Junctions? Pavement? Housing?

The side at 40 mph - has a school, shops, etc.

The side at 30 mph - has houses and some offices.

It used to be you could get out of them by not signing the NIP. Unfortunately they closed that loophole. All you can hope for is the road signs are not correct e.g. they have to be a certain size

And one of the carriageways has traffic merging before a bus stop. Would you really want people doing 40 in that situation?

It is the speed limit on the other side, and was the speed limit for the last at least 10 years.
