Would not have flown, not because of the balancing request (had to do it as well on smaller planes) but because of the jammed cargo door, because that would instantly lead me wonder what else is not working...especially on a plane run by an outfit likes of Thomas Cook

Actually bit surprised authorities allowed them to fly at all, seen them ground planes for less

I can't speak for Thomas Cook but most good airlines would have done a risk assessment before deciding to proceed.

I do remember as a kid once on a flight - one of the passenger doors would not open. In order to ensure there were sufficient emergency exits for the number of passengers on board some people were taken off so the plane few with more empty seats.

On a BA flight we were asked to remain in our allocated seats for take off because the plane was so empty it was flying very light and needed to be balanced, apparently.

That is the point though. If there had been any danger then the aircraft would have failed pre flight and not been allowed to fly.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

No big deal. Happened to me last flight I flew in May.....there were only 70 passengers in a 220 seater, so they moved us all around. But it was only for take off. As soon as the the seat belt sign went off, we were free to move

Listened to Talksport last night and two guys running the late night show said that they probably would have refused to fly also. I must say, I tend to agree as once short-cuts are taken, where do they stop !!

You'd be surprised. Have you ever watched an episode of Air Crash Investigation?

The cargo hold is always pressurised. It one of the reasons planes are cylindrical.
