Is Britain (the UK?) the bestest country in the world? Well, 20 years ago I would have agreed with this. However, with a few more year's experience of visiting other countries and their inhabitants (I admit this is only in Europe) I fear that I have very little loyalty or pride left in my country. Part of this is because I fear I'll never work again - I accept that this may be the same in other countries once one gets into mid forties territory, but I certainly feel I along with many others been shafted by the system here. But perhaps a bigger reason is the "we won the last war" mind-set we've had here. If the country (and its inhabitants) continues with this attitude, we're due a big kicking soon, as our debt-ridden government will not be able to maintain a modern armed forces for much longer.

To be fair 3 of those (in bold) were really cock-ups from the old Ottoman Empire. Afghanistan was never really controlled by the Brits - we (along with countless other invaders) tried occupying the place, but it never worked out.
