I don't know what metrics you're placing on success, but in my mind, there's no point having loads of visitors if they can't find what they're looking for. Good luck with it though.
At least it found something, which is more than can be said for my attempts with Wolfram Alpha.

"This project was started in late 2004 and about 2 years later it became clear that we need to be as relevant as Google and in order to do that we have to master power of backlinks and anchor text. As time went on many hundreds of terabytes of data were crawled it also became clear that we need to earn money as well in order to sustain our project. It took well over a year to actually achieve the level that we felt confident with to release it publicly in early 2008."

Should I tell you that this old small full text search that you refer to was last changed in Mar 2006? I know all its deficiences better than you.

We are closer to Google now in terms of backlinks DB than anyone else, quality of backlinks index is high too, so we do have a chance actually to understand how to rank results well and also earn money to pay for servers that will be needed.

The time to update full text search will come in 2010. Until then (at least this time next year) spare me your whines pointing out that some of your sites are not found in small index that was made in 2006.

Easy old boy - I saw a text field and typed in my search query.

It wasn't as relevant as I expected.

I, like millions of other potential customers, won't read/know about the date of the index before submitting our query and won't really care about the whys and wherefores, we just want a search to work.

You might wish to manage users' expectations by making it obvious it's a proof of concept, that the index is outdated.

So it's basically a good idea with weak PR?

Our customers use backlinks search and they are pretty happy with results (enough to pay for usage of the search index).

It's that effort that matters right now most because on one hand it generates money to sustain project and on another hand it will allow to actually created good full-text index.

That old full-text index was part of the learning process - we will get back to it in force next year, until then - shush!

A basic usability principle, where a search feature exists, indicate the scope of the search.

Fair enough. Although if I were you, I'd make it clear on the full index page that this is the case.
