      Why?

It seems obvious that we deal here with many-to-one relationship, even if the issue in question wan't intoxicating drink but candies, then you can't reasonably expect seller to eat candy everytime someone wants to leave a tip.

personally if i buy the gaffer and his missus a drink i expect them to have a drink not a tip and i expect them to have it with you, whether it's today, tomorrow...

i don't want to give them a £1 tip (I rather not bother). I'd rather spend more and buy em a beer. Purely social aspect.

Because if someone wants to leave a tip they say "keep the change". If they say "have a drink on me" they are buying you a drink.

They are not saying "have a drink on me, but if you don't want one then keep an arbitrary amount of cash that some pillock from Russia thinks is appropriate".

          Plank.

When I buy beer I use notes and the change is often more than is customary leaving as a tip, instead of saying keep £1 as a tip I much prefer saying have a drink on me fully aware that bars person won't be drinking. This is how it works here in Birmingham and I find it is a pretty sensible behavior.

Oh the irony... it's how things work here in Brum's pubs - at least on my local high street, this is certainly not something that comes from Russia, who is the plank here?

I know, or think I know, you live off the Hagley Road somewhere. Isn't that near Bournville, where pubs are banned? George Cadbury would be turning in his grave.

Had a weird experience in the USA a few years ago. Being a Brit, I am not a heavy tipper, just the odd 'keep the change' once a night, so that the barmaid serves you quicker than the plebs.

In a jazz bar in Memphis, I went to get the fourth round in, the barmen wouldnt serve me. He just stood there looking at me for a few seconds, then he says

'What have I done to offend you ? am I not serving you properly ? is the beer not good ?'
                    'WTF ???'
'Well you havn't tipped me once, we dont get paid and we rely on tips to make our living. 10% is typical'

So I gave him a tip but it took the shine off the day

Yes he is as usual. And he's come out of hiding purely because I was in danger of catching his post count. It's clear AtW's one and only ambition is to hold on to his (3rd?) place ranking on number of postings. What a loser
