Maybe some of us are looking ahead a bit and wondering how many fast vehicles will actually be left on the roads in a few decades when the oil slows to a trickle.

Might be better to spend the cash on sorting out that problem first. I mean, something miraculous might come along I suppose, but it's a bit of a gamble to invest in a massive road improvement project which might never have any use.

Have the total number of motoring related casualties been reduced significantly specifically due to the introduction of speed camera's?

Bet no-one can answer that, not even the government!

Most road deaths are to those INSIDE vehicles, and vehicle safety has been the NUMBER ONE contributer to preventing deaths over the decades.

From better brakes, tyres, airbags, ABS, ESP etc etc.

Camera's have always been a predominantly financial instrument, so can all these rose tinted stalinists disguised as champagne socialists please **** off already?

So they are going to put in a network of cameras covering single track roads, even ones out on Dartmoor where you can only hit stumpy little ponies? That should cost a fair few quid.

I tell you, it's political correctness gone mad.

These cameras are pretty cheap to make and only have to be at junctions, then they can cover whole road networks. They also double quite neatly as a CCTV system for the roads, police can track cars over the whole country. Muggins here did part of the code

I am surprised that nobody has suggested that this is a cynical ploy that by droppping the limit they can push through more anti privacy technology. You are all sleeping today.

Apologies for the poor service...I haven't been online for a few hours.

Oh, I have no doubt it will be used for that as well.

One day perhaps the car haters will have something they hold dear monitored 24/7 or made illegal in the "national interests", it could be something as inoffensive as gardening "wasting water is a state crime" with CCTV cameras watching everyone's lawn.

Naah...when the oil runs out there will suddenly be an amazing breakthrough and we'll be able to carry on driving our cars with an alternative fuel.

You will always be able to adapt petrol cars to run on ethanol quite easily, it's just the cost of the fuel may make it more a weekend toy, with the proles running hydrogen fuel cell-based cars.

Or, under a Labour government, roads being replaced altogether with trams and trains with micro chips put in people's brains which cause severe pain if they think about any alternative transport method that doesn't meet the "national interest". This is a good thing though as the suppression of free thought will reduce traffic accidents.
