All civilisations/societies rise and eventually decline. And all great civilisations have been multi-cultural either through trade and/or conquest, from the Babylonian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, British and right up to in modern times, the US.
It can in fact be argued that open, multi-cultural societies flourish while homogenous ones (generally) don't.

Didn't the French suffer a similar "scare" a couple of years ago as a right-wing party was gaining popularity with the voting public?

Is this not still, in fact, the case?
